Pivoting news!
... and THE ART OF THE EDIT
Dear reader,
Hello from some unexpected early wintry weather.
I am writing to tell you about a change in format: as of today, I’ll be publishing periodic essays over on my site and will share links to them or other projects—along with updates and other tidbits—here. You can pick à la carte from whatever might interest your own palette, or have the archive to return to when you’ve got the urge.
So Follow the Paint will become more of a public scrapbook or … um, newsletter.
(How original! ha)
On this week’s menu …
A BRAND NEW ESSAY:
THE ART OF THE EDIT
in praise of a dying (or devalued) craft
WHAT I’M WATCHING:
Taskmaster Series 20 when it posts once a week on YouTube — every series before that is also available there for ~FREE~ (don’t worry I’ve watched and tier-ranked them all). This show is clever, creative, and comical, and I preach its gospel wherever I go. Silly is good for your soul!
WHAT I’M READING:
Plant Dreaming Deep by May Sarton — so many underlines, just like Journal of a Solitude
Hilma af Klint by Ake Fant
Concerning the Spiritual in Art by Wassily Kandinsky — brain has to be in a very certain mode for that one
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:
a heavy rotation of several podcasts…
Taskmaster The Podcast — because what’s an enthusiasm of mine without me also listening to comedic commentary and analysis about it?
SBU English Club — the long-ass episodes where they break down the plots and give writing-group style critique to books I will never read
Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe — but only the non-guest episodes because I don’t want interviews I want chaotic British banter about mundanities, especially from the unique combination of energies that is Rob Beckett.
Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster — speaking of chaotic British banter about mundanities… except this one features a dream restaurant and a genie and that age old question POPPADOMS OR BREAD? shouted at guests—even the “serious” celebrities. God bless and keep James Acaster.
WHAT I’M WORKING ON:
a comprehensive catalog of my artwork
a short film sparked from that process
the final additions to the novella
ON THE EASEL:
Human to human: thank you for being in the ethereal “here” with me. I believe that we can sense each other’s sincerest signals through any veil or screen.
I appreciate the web of our connection and would love to hear from you.
Keep well and warm!

The Art of the Edit is soooooo good Esther!! The whole conversation fascinates me in its current relevance along many lines of thought. Editing as a process of creation, or creation being a process of editing really speaks to me right now. The curating…the selecting from the buffet, the choosing of direction and shaping via deeper intention
